Attingham Park is an 18th century mansion located in the village of Atcham, on the B4380 near Shrewsbury in Shropshire. It was built in 1785 and is now owned by the National Trust.
To avoid the steps at the main entrance to the mansion there is wheelchair access into the house via a separate doorway at the rear of the building. This takes visitors into the basement where they are met by a member of staff who will escort them to a lift and up to the ground floor where accessibility is good. There is also wheelchair access to the kitchen and the vault (which houses an impressive collection of silver) both of which are located in the basement.
Although there is a further lift to the upper floor where extensive restoration work is in progress, due to fire safety regulations, only visitors who have some ambulant ability may use it.
There is a shuttle bus to take visitors from the reception area down to the mansion but it is not wheelchair accessible. However the pathway down to the accessible entrance is good and is an easy wheeling distance.
The main tearoom is not accessible however if wheelchairs users are accompanied by an able companion there are outside tables. Alternatively there is a cafe with level access in the courtyard area near reception.
There are good pathways through the estate and up to the newly restored walled garden.
Also on the Attingham Estate but a couple of miles away at Brompton Farm is the Brompton Cookery School which has a fully accessible kitchen station and offers a wide range of courses. For more information and a link to their website please click here.
