Find Accommodation near 'The Lyneal Trust (Canal Boating)'

The Lyneal Trust is based in Shropshire and is a registered charity that provides holidays and canal boat trips for people with disabilities with their families, friends or in groups from its base at Lyneal Wharf.

This page is dedicated to the Shropshire Lad, which is a 45 foot canal boat owned by the Trust. It has been designed for use and operation by people with disabilities and is available for day trips.

A volunteer skipper can be provided for the day trips however a hands-on approach is part of the Trusts ethos towards the boating experience and passengers are encouraged to steer the boat themselves.

The boat includes a ramp, a hydraulic lift and hydraulic steering in addition to the conventional tiller.

The bow area of the boat is covered by a canopy and facilities on board include a toilet and galley with a hob and fridge. Groups will have full use of the galley to prepare lunches and will need to bring their own provisions.

Day trips are available on The Shropshire Lad from March to the end of October.

Maximum number of passengers is 12. For comfort, the Trust guidelines recommend that the optimum number of wheelchairs users is two.* If required the boat is available for the full day and groups will be asked to state the time they require between 10.00 am and 6.00 pm.

* It might be worth noting that the suitability of this boat for groups that include wheelchair users is mentioned within the personal account comment below.

Comments

The Canal Boat trip was a very pleasant day out, the surrounding area and views were beautiful. The man who skippered the boat for us could not have been more helpful.

Access from the canalside on to the boat was via a ramp and a lift which worked well.

The area within the toilet was reasonable however the toilet pan was rather high and one of the normally more able bodied group members needed some assistance to get up on to it. We also found the kitchen space was rather small for our use.

Our party consisted of one manual wheelchair user and six other people and we found that space within the boat was limited. In order for the more able bodied members of the group to move around inside safely we had to position the person using the wheelchair in the canopied end of the boat, slightly away from her fellow passengers.
